Identify which part of autofill failed
When Workday autofill is not working, first decide whether the file failed to attach, the file attached but its text was mapped incorrectly, or a field looked filled but was not saved. These are different problems. Re-exporting a resume may help a file issue, but it will not fix a school dropdown that requires you to select an option.
| What you see | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No attachment appears | Allowed file type, size, and error message | Export a supported file and retry once |
| Attachment present; work history empty | Whether you selected Autofill with Resume | Use that route if available, or enter the fields manually |
| Jobs and education are mixed together | Resume reading order and section labels | Simplify the document, then correct the mapped fields |
| A skill or school disappears | Whether a dropdown item or tag was selected | Select the matching value and review the next step |
| Previously correct data changes | Whether another upload or old application was imported | Restore the intended information before continuing |
Washington and Lee's employer instructions distinguish Autofill with Resume, Apply Manually, and Use My Last Application. That is a useful example of why the selected starting route matters. Your target employer may offer different choices, labels, and upload restrictions; follow the instructions on its own form.
Protect the draft before trying another upload
Keep the job URL, requisition number, and current resume file together. Save any long answers in a local document before refreshing or changing browsers. If the form has a save action, use it. Do not assume every keystroke has been preserved simply because you can still see it on the screen.
- Read the exact validation message, including the allowed file types and maximum size.
- Check that the document opens normally and is not password-protected.
- Keep the original editable resume and export a fresh copy in a supported format.
- Try a current browser if the employer recommends one; isolate a suspected extension conflict one extension at a time.
- If you need to clear site data, first confirm your saved draft and remember that you may be signed out.
Avoid opening several competing drafts for the same requisition. It becomes difficult to know which copy contains your latest corrections. A second account is also a poor troubleshooting tool: it creates a separate identity and can complicate your application history without fixing the underlying upload problem.
Repair a scrambled resume import
Start with a readable document: standard headings, one clear reading order, ordinary text for important details, and consistent month-and-year dates. If your PDF is a scan, exporting directly from the editable source is preferable to treating an image as a resume. A selectable-text check can reveal an obvious issue, although it does not simulate the employer's parser.
Compare one experience entry at a time against your source resume. Check employer name, job title, location, start date, end date, and description. Then do the same for education. An accurate attachment can coexist with incorrect structured fields, so review both. If manual corrections work, finishing those corrections may be faster than another round of exporting and uploading.
Choose and test your resume file — Use a controlled file check instead of assuming every PDF or DOCX behaves the same.
Check fields that look filled but are incomplete
A typeahead control often needs a selected result, not just typed words. Click the relevant school, country, or skill option when the form offers one. Use an alternative such as Other only when the form provides it and it accurately fits. Do not choose an unrelated institution merely to remove an error.
| Field | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Dates | Correct month, year, and current-position setting |
| Skills | Saved tags rather than uncommitted text |
| Education | Actual institution, degree, and expected completion date |
| Attachment | Correct role-specific version, with no missing pages |
| Screening answers | Accurate responses to this employer's exact questions |
Revisit the review screen after any document replacement. Previous screening answers or a reused application can be out of date. Your goal is a consistent final application, not a perfectly automated process. ApplyAgents can reduce repeated entry, but every populated field still deserves your review.
Escalate a persistent error with useful details
Subject: Application form issue — [role / requisition] Hello, I'm applying for [role] through your careers site. At [step], I receive [exact error] when [action]. I tried [one or two relevant steps] using [browser and version]. Could you advise how to complete this application before [published deadline, if any]? I have not submitted a duplicate application. Thank you, [Name]
Use the recruiting or technical-support contact listed by the employer. Include a redacted screenshot if it helps explain the error, but leave out passwords and unrelated personal information. If you already submitted, ask how corrections should be handled. Washington and Lee, for example, explicitly restricts changes after submission; do not assume a later profile edit updates an application everywhere.

Common questions
- Why did Workday attach my resume but leave the form blank?
- The attachment and structured fields are separate. Check the starting route and employer instructions, then manually complete missing fields if necessary.
- Should I upload my resume again after correcting the fields?
- Only when you need to replace the attachment. Another import may change information you already corrected, so review the whole application afterward.
- Can a different file format guarantee correct autofill?
- No. Follow the employer's supported formats and inspect the actual result. File structure and the employer's configuration both matter.
Stop retyping the same application.
