Google hires interns through role specific postings on its careers site, mainly in software engineering, site reliability engineering, research, business, and design. Each posting needs a resume with your graduation date in MM/YY format and, for software roles, a current transcript in English. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and can take more than 90 days. For summer 2027, the US undergraduate software posting has already closed, so the realistic moves now are the open postings that fit you and preparing for the next cycle.
Everything below comes from Google's own careers site, checked on October 18, 2026. I quote the postings directly where it matters, because a lot of what circulates about Google internships online is from programs that no longer run.
What is open right now
A search of Google Careers for “Software Engineering Intern” with the intern filter on October 18, 2026 returned 15 roles. The only US based software posting was the PhD one. The rest were outside the US, including BS/MS software and site reliability intern roles in places like London, Zurich, Warsaw, and Bucharest, PhD roles in several countries, and part time intern roles in Tel Aviv.
In other words, the US undergraduate software engineering posting for summer 2027 had already run its course. That matches how big tech recruits: the biggest programs post in the summer and early fall a year ahead. Where the rest of the market sits right now is covered in when to apply for summer internships.
Non software intern roles, such as business, design, and research, have their own postings and timelines. Search Google Careers with the intern filter and your field, and check back regularly, since new postings appear across the year.
Eligibility and what Google asks for
From the summer 2027 US PhD software engineering intern posting:
- Minimum qualifications: pursuing a PhD in computer science or a related technical field, and experience coding in a language such as C, C++, Java, or Python.
- Preferred qualifications: currently attending a degree program in the US, available to work full time for 12 weeks outside term time, in the penultimate academic year or returning to a degree program after the internship, and research experience in areas like algorithms, distributed systems, or machine learning.
- Location: you must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship, and you can state a preferred office from a list of around thirty US locations.
- Language: English proficiency is required.
The materials are specific and worth getting right the first time:
- 1
Resume section
Attach an updated resume or CV. Google asks that your anticipated graduation date be listed on it in MM/YY format. - 2
Education section
Attach a current or recent transcript in English. Unofficial is accepted. Select Now attending under Degree Status to see the upload option. - 3
Location preference
Choose your preferred office locations. Google says its recruitment team determines where you fit best based on your resume.
A missing graduation date or a missing transcript is the kind of mistake that ends an application before anyone reads your projects. Check both before you click Submit.
How the process works
Google describes the timeline in its postings rather than as a fixed sequence:
- Rolling review. Applications are reviewed as they arrive, and the window can close early once available projects are full.
- Long waits are normal. Hearing back can take upwards of 90 days. If three months pass with no word, Google says it has likely moved forward with other candidates for that role.
- Recruiters may redirect you. Google says recruiters might reach out about a different role that matches your skills and interests.
- Team placement. For software interns, Google says you will work on a specific project critical to its needs, as either a software engineering or site reliability intern.
For technical interviews, prepare as you would for any big tech software internship: data structures and algorithms practice in the language you know best, explaining your thinking out loud, and testing your own code. Google interviews are widely reported to be coding focused for interns, but Google does not publish a fixed format on the posting, and the details come with your interview invitation.
What happened to STEP
For years, the standard advice to first and second year students was to apply to Google STEP. As of October 2026, Google's careers site has no STEP postings and no live STEP program page. Treat any guide built around STEP as out of date unless it links to a current Google posting.
If you are early in your degree, there are still programs designed for you elsewhere. Microsoft's Explore program is specifically for first and second year students, and is covered in the Microsoft internship guide. The broader list is in can you get an internship as a first year student.
Getting your resume through
- Mirror the posting's language. If it lists distributed systems, machine learning, or specific languages, and you have that experience, use the same words. The method is in how to find the ATS keywords that matter.
- Lead with technical evidence.Projects and past roles with scale, users, or performance results. Google's postings talk about scalable, distributed systems, so concrete numbers matter.
- One clean page. Single column, standard section headings, a PDF. Here is what breaks parsers.
- Graduation date in MM/YY. Google asks for it explicitly.
How to be ready for the next cycle
If the posting you wanted is closed, use the time well. Next cycle's big tech software postings will most likely appear in the summer and early fall again. Before then:
- Finish one substantial technical project with measurable results.
- Practice coding problems regularly, not in a burst the week before.
- Keep an unofficial transcript PDF ready to upload.
- Apply to the many companies still hiring for summer 2027, so you walk into next cycle with interview experience. The playbook is in how to get an internship.
- Check Google Careers with the intern filter regularly from early summer onward and apply in the first week a posting appears.
If you are applying across big tech, the Amazon SDE internship guide covers a company still accepting summer 2027 applications on an ongoing basis.
Common questions
- Is the Google software engineering internship for summer 2027 still open?
- As of October 18, 2026, the US undergraduate and master's software engineering intern posting for summer 2027 was no longer listed on Google's careers site. The US PhD software engineering intern posting was open, with an anticipated application window until February 26, 2027. Several international software and site reliability intern postings were also open.
- Does Google require a transcript for internships?
- Yes, for its software engineering intern postings. Google asks for an updated resume and a current unofficial or official transcript in English, uploaded in the Education section after selecting Now attending under Degree Status.
- How much do Google interns get paid?
- Google's US PhD software engineering intern posting for summer 2027 lists a range of $118,000 to $157,000 USD on an annualized basis, plus benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance for eligible US interns. Pay for other intern roles is listed on each posting.
- Does Google still have the STEP internship?
- As of October 2026, Google's careers site shows no STEP postings and no live STEP program page. STEP was historically aimed at first and second year students. Check Google's students and internships pages for any current early career program before planning around it.
- How long does Google take to respond to internship applications?
- Google's intern postings say timing varies and can take upwards of 90 days. If you have not heard back in three months, Google says it has likely proceeded with other candidates for that role, though recruiters may reach out about a different match.
- Can I apply to more than one Google internship?
- Google's postings are role specific, and its recruitment team says it determines where you fit best based on your resume, including between software engineering and site reliability engineering. Apply to the postings you genuinely fit rather than every listing.
