Meta hires software engineering interns through a single general posting on Meta Careers for bachelor's and master's students, plus separate PhD and specialty postings. The internship lasts at least 12 weeks, pays $7,313 to $12,667 a month in the US according to Meta's own listing, and comes with a mentor and housing assistance. As of October 19, 2026, the undergraduate software posting was open.
Unlike Google, whose US undergraduate software posting for 2027 had already closed by mid October, Meta's was still accepting applications. Everything below comes from Meta Careers, checked on October 19, 2026.
What Meta has open right now
A search of Meta Careers on October 19, 2026 showed the general Software Engineering Intern posting, several PhD software and research scientist intern roles in areas like machine learning, systems, and AI, and a handful of named summer 2027 roles such as Data Engineer Intern and Data Scientist Intern in Product Analytics.
Meta does not run an early career program for first and second years that is comparable to Microsoft Explore on its current student page. If you are early in your degree, the Microsoft guide and first year internship guide cover programs built for you.
What the software internship involves
Meta lists four responsibilities on the posting:
- Develop and push production ready code by ramping up quickly on an assigned codebase.
- Complete assigned tasks efficiently with few iterations.
- Identify problem statements, outline solutions, and account for tradeoffs and edge cases.
- Communicate effectively across multiple stakeholders.
The posting also describes a fast development cycle where code can be live within hours, and small teams working on products used by millions. In practice, that means Meta is screening for students who can learn an unfamiliar codebase quickly and ship. Projects where you worked inside someone else's code, such as open source contributions or a team project with an existing codebase, are good evidence of exactly that.
Eligibility, exactly as posted
| Minimum qualifications | Preferred qualifications |
|---|---|
| Enrolled full time in a degree program, working toward a bachelor's or master's in computer science or a related field | Software engineering experience from a previous internship, work experience, coding competitions, or publications |
| Experience coding in an industry standard language, such as Java, Python, C++, Objective-C, or JavaScript | Intent to return to your degree program after the internship |
| Work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, maintained during employment |
Note the work authorization line. Meta asks you to obtain it by the time of hire. If you need sponsorship, read the posting and your application questions carefully and answer them accurately; screening questions about authorization are a common cause of automatic rejections.
A previous internship is a preference, not a requirement. Coding competitions, publications, and real project work sit on the same line of the posting.
Pay and benefits
The US range on the posting is $7,313 to $12,667 per monthin base pay. Meta says individual pay is set by skills, qualifications, experience, and location, and that the figure excludes bonus, equity, or sales incentives. Over a 12 week internship, the range works out to very roughly $20,000 to $35,000 before tax. For comparison, NACE's 2026 benchmarks put the average intern hourly rate across all employers at $23.35.
Meta's student page also lists one on one mentorship from day one, housing assistance for the duration of the internship, learning sessions on AI and engineering practices, and networking and social events.
How to stand out
- Apply now. The posting is open, and large employers generally review on a rolling basis. Timing across the industry is in when to apply for summer internships.
- Show shipping, not just building.Users, deploys, pull requests merged into a real project, latency or reliability numbers. Meta's posting is about production code.
- Mirror the posting's language where it is true of you: tradeoffs, edge cases, ramping up on a codebase. Here is how to pull those keywords out.
- Prepare for coding interviews early. Data structures and algorithms, explained out loud, with edge cases and tests. The general prep approach is in internship interview questions.
- Do not stop at Meta. The Amazon posting was also still open in October. Set a weekly target with how many internships to apply to.
After the internship
Meta's student page says that whether you are graduating and hoping to join full time or want to come back for another internship, it will help you get there. How the decision actually gets made, and how to steer it during your twelve weeks, is covered in how to get a return offer.
