IBM hires interns through hundreds of individual postings on its careers site, mostly in consulting, software engineering, data, and security. For 2027, a search returned 352 results in late October 2026. A typical program runs 10 weeks from May to July, and high performing interns can move into IBM's full time Associate Program. IBM explicitly asks applicants to apply only to roles that match their skills, not to every posting.
That last point is unusual, and it changes how you should approach IBM compared with most employers. Everything below comes from IBM's careers site, checked October 23, 2026.

What an IBM intern does
The Intern Application Developer 2027 posting describes interns contributing to real client projects with experienced IBMers, in a culture of mentorship and coaching. Example work includes joining cross functional teams to define technical specs, documenting design decisions, writing reusable code and taking part in code review, and full stack cloud native development across databases, cloud providers, and UI frameworks.
IBM tells applicants not to apply to every entry level posting. Choosing three roles that fit well is the strategy it is asking for.
Requirements, from a real posting
From the Intern Application Developer 2027 posting in Chicago:
- Currently pursuing a university degree with a track record of academic success, with preferred majors spanning computer science, information systems, data science, AI, analytics, finance, accounting, economics, supply chain, and more.
- Exposure to at least one language or tool such as Java, C++, Python, Scala, R, SAS, SQL, HTML, SPSS, VBA, or Tableau.
- Leadership experience, communication skills, and willingness to travel as needed.
- Preferred: databases, cloud platforms, containers, generative AI, APIs, and AI assistants used with critical thinking and validation.
- Onsite in Chicago, with travel listed as up to 100%, or five days a week with weekends at home, based on project requirements.
- No visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
Pay on that posting is $39,720 to $72,820 per year projected, which IBM bases on a full time calendar year. How that compares with other employers is in how much do interns make.
How to choose which roles to apply to
- Start from your strongest evidence. If your projects are in Java and SQL, the Oracle and Salesforce developer roles fit better than a strategy consulting role.
- Check the hard lines. Location, travel, and sponsorship. These are not preferences you can talk your way around.
- Match the platform. Many IBM Consulting roles are tied to a vendor platform. If a posting lists a certification you have, such as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations, put it near the top of your resume.
- Tailor for each one. Two or three tailored applications beat ten generic ones here. The method is in how to tailor your resume to a job description.
- Track each application in your IBM Careers account, which IBM says gives a central view of your active applications.
This is a different balance from how many internships to apply to overall: send plenty of applications across employers, but be selective within one employer that asks you to.
After the internship
IBM's postings say high performing interns have a clear pathway into its Associate Program, based on results and performance. The general playbook for turning any internship into an offer is in how to get a return offer. If you are also looking at consulting elsewhere, the Deloitte internship guide covers a firm with a very different, much earlier calendar.
